Jason Bourne Review

Following on from a highly successful trilogy of action movies featuring Matt Damon as an ex-assassin, Jason Bourne is a film that goes back to basics as its title character is forced out of hiding by an unforeseeable set of events. Despite having spent the last decade away from the agency that changed his life forever, Bourne finds himself in continuous danger as he is tracked down by a former CIA agent with noble intentions but questionable motivations. After managing to locate Bourne, the operative is soon stopped in her tracks by intelligence agents and it is up to a hacker on the inside to help Jason in the face of a huge operation to terminate him once and for all.

Jason Bourne is one of many sequels to be named after the main characters of a particular set of movies. From Stallone reboots like Rambo and Rocky Balboa to recent blockbusters like John Wick and Jack Reacher, the titular character has become everything in the action genre; particularly when roles are given to huge Hollywood stars who struggle to escape their celebrity status. Although he’s not the most charismatic of performers, Matt Damon’s interpretation of the Robert Ludlum character he has played for over fourteen years is pretty close to the novels.

Bourne is not a charming character. He doesn’t have gadgets or nice cars and, within the universe created by the movies, his romantic appeal sadly died along with his girlfriend Marie. So what does the character of Jason Bourne have to offer exactly? Mostly his wits and his on-the-go smarts which is what really appeals to people. His character truly changed the way we look at “secret agents” and “covert operatives”. While he isn’t the first one to actually create such a charm, he definitely was one of the popular ones. The now well-known theme performed by Moby in the closing credits completes the film as a ‘Bourne’ spectacle.

What do we think of the movie? Well, we would like to give it a pretty neat 8 out of 10.
