The Magnificent Seven: This Makes it a 777

Hold your horses!

777 is not a secret code or a number representing something evil. Simply put, that is our numerical representation for the three “Seven” based movies, as we would like to call them.

This tale of seven began in 1954, when the legendary, and one of our favourite filmmakers, Akira Kurosawa released Seven Samurai. If you are all pondering why this filmmaker is considered legendary then, well, there are too many reasons to list. But one fact that you will find very interesting is that Akira Kurosawa is often credited to pioneering the “group of misfits get together to save the people/village/town/city/others” theme of movies.

So basically, if you love The Avengers, then you should be thanking Master Akira (bows).

Fast forward to the year 1960 when a Hollywood remake of the movie, named The Magnificent Seven, was released by adding a touch of American culture which American audiences might find appealing; they introduced cowboys. Now it may sound like we are just prepping ourselves to bash the Hollywood remake, but we aren’t about to do that. In fact, the remake was a wonderful movie in its own right. Plus, it is difficult to avoid a bad movie by putting together Steve McQueen, Yul Brynner and Charles Bronson as cowboys.

Hit the fast forward again and we have arrived in the year 2016 where superhero flicks, the fourth Bourne movie (that’s right, it is happening and you can watch the awesome trailer here), more superhero flicks and endless remakes are the order of the day (or year). So, when we say endless remakes, we meant that even The Magnificent Seven wasn’t spared from the Hollywood revamp crosshairs.

Hence, we have the 2016 version of the 1960 cowboy version of the 1954 samurai original. Of course, the trailers are presented to look massively attractive. But here are a few key points that we think will decide the movie’s fate.

  1. The original movie killed off its characters over the course of the runtime. It was meant to show realism and present a sense of dread and anticipation. By slowly revealing the demise of the characters, we were often left wondering who’s fate will be sealed next and how many will survive by the end of the movie. Moreover, it made the audience truly feel a sense of loss that lasted the entire span of the second half of the movie. In the 1960 remake however, the characters were kept alive until the finale, where certain characters meet their timely end. Knowing how Hollywood has been hesitant killing of characters recently, we are thinking everyone will be kept alive at the end.
  2. The trailer has shown us clips of intense action sequences and while this is essential to attract viewer, we are wondering if this is overshadow the story. We hope not, since Denzel Washington is truly a spectacular actor and this shouldn’t be a black spot on his career. Then again, anything with Denzel is awesome because of Denzel. And also, Vincent D’Onofrio.

We can only wait to see how this movie turns out. Until then, this trailer.
